Its been a few years since updating this blog so I intend to keep it up to date as we have a new web site at http://www.nosferatuakitas.co.uk . We had seventeen Akita puppies born on Christmas day Minnie (Nosferatu Thundercat) had 8 and Nellie Kim (Nosferatu Nellie Kim) had 9. All are doing well

THE 2006 SHOW SEASON

Its the start of the 2006 show season and Manchester was our first show in January. Carol Bevis was our judge. Tiger (Nosferatu Toast of New York) won Puppy Dog and went on to be best Puppy Dog. Sophie won Puppy bitch. This was the last time in puppy for them both so I suppose we had a decent day out.

We are into the last few shows of the year now, and Midland Counties was our next show on the 28th October 2005 at Stafford Showground. We only took Sophie. What a great day we had and a big thanks to breed specialist Liz Dunhill for giving Sophie the Bitch Challenge Certificate (her first), Best Bitch and Best Puppy in Breed. She went on to win third in the Pro Plan Puppy Bitch Stakes in a class of over 50 exhibits. We believe that this makes Sophie the Top Winning Akita Puppy of 2005. Thanks to everyone for their applause and congratulations on the day.

The Akita Association specialty Championship Show was our next show, Tiger won Minor Puppy Dog and Sophie was Best Puppy Bitch and Reserve Best Puppy in Show. The next General Championship Show was Driffield on 16.10.05. An early start of 9am and we certainly all knew that Autumn had arrived - it was so cold. The Judge for the day was Gill Hadliegh who hasn't been active in the Akita breed since early days. Sophie won minor Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy Bitch. We only took Sophie, Tigers put on to much weight so he's on a diet for his next show, Minnie and Skippy are trying to grow a coat and will return to the ring soon.

Our next Show was Darlington Championship Show on the 19th September. Again it was a new venue at Newby Hall, a much better venue than previously, and was one hour nearer home. We had a weekend in a million, Sophie won Minor puppy bitch and Tiger won Minor puppy dog. Sophie went on to win Best Puppy in Breed, Best Puppy in the Utility Group and on the final day BEST PUPPY IN SHOW. A big thanks to both Top all round Judges, Ellis Hume and Andrew Brace for giving Sophie this TOP UK AWARD

To Richmond Championship Show on the 9.9.05, a new venue as from last year, it was previously held at Ascot Racecourse. We started out at 0505hrs to avoid traffic on the M25, it took us two hours to arrive at the new venue at Losely Park near Guildford. It was the first time out for Tiger (Nosferatu Toast of New York) he was a little star, he won Minor Puppy Dog Akita and Best Akita Puppy Dog. Sophie won Minor Puppy Bitch, Best Puppy Bitch and Beat her Brother for Best Puppy In Breed. Their Mom Nosferatu Thundercat won Limit Bitch and their dad Champion Redwitch Heaven can Wait (Owned by Jenny & Arlene) won Best Of Breed and Utility Group 4. It was great to see them all together and winning - thanks to the judge, Breed Specialist Marion Sargeant.

It was Birmingham Championship Show on 4.9.05, Sophie (Nosferatu She's No Angel) won Best Puppy Akita Bitch again. Tommy (Champion Nosferatu Nemesis For Sukari) owned by Gary and Gail and of course bred by ourselves, won the Akita Dog Challenge Certificate. This makes him the #1 winning white Akita of all time in the UK.

Just got back from Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show - it was breed specialist Tracey Morgan's first time with Challenge Certificates for Akitas. I have to say Tracey made all the exhibitors feel at ease, but most of all was kind to the dogs and courteous to the exhibitors. Sophie (Nosferatu She's No Angel) won Minor Puppy bitch again and went on to win Best Puppy Bitch Akita, only beaten for best Puppy by the dog who is after all almost 5 months her senior . Her Mom Minnie (Nosferatu Thundercat) won Limit Bitch and the Reserve Challenge Certificate. Another great day out.

Our first show with the new akita puppies out of Nosferatu Thundercat, was Leeds Championship Show. We took Sophie, Nosferatu She's No Angel what a great day everyone loved her, she won the minor puppy bitch class, and best puppy bitch at just over 6 months old. Thank you to breed specialist Geof Corish. Welsh Kennel Club Championship Show was our next Show on the 21.8.05. Sophie won Minor Puppy Bitch and went on to beat the dog puppy for Best Puppy In Breed under judge Bob Gregory. Her Mom, Minnie won Limit Bitch only her second time out since the puppies were born. Sophie was also entered in the Gundog/Utility puppy stakes and was second out of a class of 40 bitches.

Dave Killilea judged akitas at Bath Championship Show and Nellie Kim won Best Puppy and the reserve bitch CC, Tina was so pleased and it really made our day. At Paignton Ch show, Shirley Jones judged Akitas for the first time. It was Nellie Kims first time in Junior bitch and she won her class. It was also Thundecats first outing after her puppies were born and she was placed third in a strong Open bitch class.

We had a good year in 2004 ending up with Champion Nosferatu Nemesis at Sukari being #2 Top Winning Male and Champion Nosferatu Artic Fox being #2 Top Akita Brood Bitch in the UK.
Champion Nosferatu Nemesis at Sukari won the first CC of 2005 and was Best of Breed Akita at Manchester dog Show in January 2005. He also won Open Dog at Crufts together with reserve best Akita dog - the reserve CC. He also won Best In Show at the National Akita Specialty in 2005.
Champion Nosferatu Artic Fox had her last litter in August 2004 to Champion Redwitch Feel Free to Stare. She produced one white akita puppy, Nosferatu Nellie Kim
Nosferatu Thundercats akita puppies were born in January 2005 and we kept a dog and a bitch. She was mated to Champion Redwitch Heaven can Wait. She produced really dark colored flashy puppies with perfect white markings. Thundercat has been out of the show ring for most of the beginning part of 2005 getting her coat back.

REARING AKITA PUPPIES

I suppose everyone looks at other peoples show puppies and sometimes wonder why they look in such good condition. Does anyone think that the way you feed puppies from weaning to fully grown makes a difference. In a discussion with someone who has been in akitas for a long time the topic of rearing akita puppies was raised. He made the point that if you take two puppies from the same litter sell one and keep the other, the one you sell never seems to turn out as good as it should. Is this down to experience in picking the best puppy or is it the fact that experience in feeding and housing makes a bigger difference than you may think. Many breeders just feed a proprietary puppy porridge and a complete puppy food. Back in the days prior to these convenience dog foods we would feed Goats milk, Rusk, fresh Mince, tinned Fish, fresh tripe, primrose oil and various natural mixers. How do you feed puppies and which regime do you think is best for quality results, I would be interested in your views

AKITA EXPERTS

I was talking to some Akita friends at a show today and the conversation got around to the content of web sites in the UK. Particularly the offer of help and advice for the breed. I would be interested to have the input of others on what constitutes an EXPERT on Akita matters. What would be the ramifications of giving the wrong advice to someone. Would you say 10 years of showing and breeding would be enough, or 5 years to little. Would qualification for the Akita Breed Club B, A3 list be adequate - perhaps only people who have passed a Breed Specific Seminar. Let me know.
